Manitoba Registered Music Teachers' Association (MRMTA)
Benefits of Membership in MRMTA
- Directory
An annual Directory listing all MRMTA members
in the province is published and distributed to all
member teachers, school music teachers, directory
advertisers, and other interested organizations and
associations throughout the province. Copies of the
Directory are also available to the public free of
charge from music stores and libraries, and can be
requested through the Registrar at (204) 339-6768.
- Public Liability Insurance
MRMTA members pay a small annual premium for
General Liability Insurance coverage of $5,000,000
to teach out of the home.
- Workshops and Meetings
The "Take Note" newsletter, published 3 times
a year, informs the membership of upcoming workshops
and meetings, as well as any other activities of
interest. Each of the 3 branches (Winnipeg, Brandon,
Southern Manitoba) keeps its members informed of
activities specific to that Branch.
- CFMTA
Membership in MRMTA includes membership in the
Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Associations
(CFMTA) and an opportunity for professional
development through the CFMTA biennial conventions
held in a different province on a rotating
basis.
- Pre-Diploma Group
The Winnipeg Branch currently has a successful
mentorship program for advanced students working
towards their diploma and starting a studio of their
own.
- Canada Music Week Music Writing Competition
Young composers can enter their compositions
for adjudication in the Music Writing Competition
sponsored by CFMTA. Winning compositions at the
Provincial level are forwarded to the National
competition.
- Pianothon/Musicthon
Students can collect pledges to perform in the
annual Pianothon/Musicthon held in conjunction with
the Variety Club of Manitoba. The funds raised are
used by Variety for Special Arts Projects such as
music programs in subsidized daycare centres and
various music therapy programs.
- Scholarship Series Competition
Students can participate in the annual
Scholarship Series Competition sponsored by the
Winnipeg Branch. Approximately $7,000 is awarded to
students in various disciplines and levels through a
performance audition process.
- CFMTA Young Artist Series
Diploma students looking for more performance
opportunities can audition for the biennial Western
Young Artist Series, in which the winner is provided
with the experience of a short concert tour.
- CFMTA Scholarship Competition
A Piano Competition for advanced students is held
at the biennial CFMTA conventions, with approximately
$10,000 in prize money available to be awarded.
Students must compete at the Provincial level, with one
being selected to compete at the National level. At
some conventions, competitions in other disciplines are
also held, with provincial representatives selected in
the same manner as for the Piano Competition.
